I’ve been working in Estate Agency for 10 years now and I set up Popular Move 3 years ago.

What do you like about being an estate agent?

I’m a people person and there’s nothing better than helping someone complete one of the most important transactions in life.

 How is the Pembrokeshire housing market at present?

This is one of the more common questions I get asked. Unfortunately I don’t have a crystal ball, but it would seem that through all the doom and gloom it is still possible to sell and buy within a reasonable time scale as long as you’re realistic.

 What advice would you give to someone looking to sell?

As mentioned it is important to achieve the best price for a property but also to remain realistic in the current climate. You also need to ensure that the property is advertised regular and seen on all the major property websites including Rightmove and Zoopla. I recently saw a stat that suggested 89% of buyers see your property online first.

 What should a landlord do if their property isn’t letting?

 What properties are letting well and what is there demand for?

We are busier then ever with rental properties. We have a huge demand within the Pembrokeshire towns. Most of our rentals within Haverfordwest are renting out in days of coming available.

 What advice would you give someone looking to buy or rent?

Make sure you register on our database. Either by entering your details on our website or by calling our office. We are taking calls 7 days a week. We can then keep you up to date by phone, email and post.

 What puts buyers / tenants off?

Apart from over pricing I would say presentation. Sometimes it looks worse than it is but I’ve seen buyers and tenants walk away because the property has been poorly presented.

 What makes a home stand out?

It’s about the first impression. The first pictures, the first sight as they visit the property. Make sure you make every effort to get this right.

 What should a vendor do if their property isn’t selling or letting?

Well, firstly don’t panic, you may not be the only one. Go back to the basics. Look at the price compared to others, look at the presentation and look at the advertising. You can find on some occasions that a second opinion or a second set of eyes can spot something that can be effecting the performance of your property.

 Out of all the properties you have seen, describe your favourite:

One of my favourites was a town house I sold in Tenby, Amazing views up and down the coast and steps down onto the beach (you would be lucky to have this combination anywhere in the country). As you can imagine we had a lot of interest and we sold it within weeks.   

 What is the funniest/strangest or best feature you have ever seen in a property?

I have recently seen a property that was rebuilt and repositioned over a well. Instead of hiding it the developer covered the well with reinforced glas,s which now forms part of the kitchen floor. Even better, when you use the tap in the kitchen It’s actually drawing the water from the same well. I thought this was an amazing bit of intuition. 

 What is your top tip for a day out/place to visit in the county? Why?

I love taking the children down the beach on a Sunday morning for a walk. We’re spoilt for choice with beaches in this county but I’m a big fan of Newgale Beach.

What’s your favourite pub/restaurant or eating or drinking place and why?

Having two small children at home can reduce the opportunity to eat out but we’ve had a couple really good meals recently at The Georges, Haverfordwest.  Great food and service.

We currently manage rental properties throughout Pembrokeshire including towns such as Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, Fishguard and Pembroke / Pembroke Dock. The main problem occurs  when tenants turn heating down or even off in rooms that they may not use.  I’ve attached the tenant checklist below.

Tenant Winter Checklist

Extreme cold can cause water pipes in your home to freeze and sometimes break. Please have a read through the points below to help avoid any major winter damage.

• Leave all water taps slightly open so they drip continuously. (In severe conditions)

• Check the location of the water stopcock

• Keep the indoor temperature warm.

• Allow more heated air near pipes. Open kitchen cabinet doors under the kitchen sink.

• If your pipes do freeze, do not thaw them with a torch. Thaw the pipes slowly with warm air from an electric hair dryer.

• If you cannot thaw your pipes, or if the pipes have broken open, use bottled water or get water from a neighbour’s home.

• Have bottled water on hand.

Heating Checklist

• Have at least one of the following heat sources in case the power goes out:

- Fireplace with plenty of dry firewood or gas log fireplace.

- Portable space heaters.

• Check with your local fire department to make sure that kerosene heaters are legal in your area.

• Never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water.

• Use electric space heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non glowing elements.

• Keep heat sources at least 3 feet away from furniture and curtains.

• Never leave children unattended near a space heater.

• Have the following safety equipment:

- Smoke alarm in working order (Check once a month and change batteries once a year.)

- Carbon monoxide detector

Cooking & Lighting Checklist

• Never use charcoal grills or portable gas camp stove indoors—the fumes are deadly.

• Use battery-powered flash lights or lanterns.

• Avoid using candles.

• Never leave lit candles alone
